Longhua District is the residential area of Hakka people. It is named as “Home of Culture” “Home town of Overseas Chinese” and “Old Revolutionary Base”. It has four district level historical units: Longhua Legacy, Gui Lake Old Housing, Bailongshi Culture Famous Figure Rescue site and other; five district level historical protection sites including Wenxiuwen Diaolou, and Qing Lake Temple; five historical villages including Dashuitian Historical Village and Xinweichang Historical Village; and eight other historical villages, such as Niuhu Historical Village and Songyuanxia Historical Village. Dachuankeng Dragon Dance and other traditional culture projects are selected as national level intellectual properties. IN addition, Longhua District is known as the source of “Migrant Worker Culture” .
Dachuankeng Dragon Dance
Dachuankeng Dragon Dance started during Ming Dynasty. It has over 400 years of history.
Dachuankeng Dragon Dance has been performed during weddings and memorial ceremony among Hakka people for hundreds of years. It has its unique nationality, folk value and heritage. It also has an important social impact. Dachuankeng “Dragon” is usually six meters long. Decorated with silk, the head of “dragon” is made of bamboo; its eyes can move; and its mouth can move too. The newly made “dragon” shall get good wishes from the god. The eldest player in Dragon dance team will remove the red carpet on the head of “dragon”. In this way, a “dragon” can be born. This is an auspicious symbol. There are eight sections in Dachuankeng Dragon Dance: fore room worship-around the house-two dragon meets-Cai Qing-Garden Tour-doze off-around the house-three worships. The whole Dragon Dance performance will last 25 minutes. There will be a series of other performances such as martial arts after Dragon Dance. The whole performance will last 50-60 minutes.
Chinese Culture Celebrity Rescue Memorial
In 1942, Japan invaded and occupied Hong Kong. There were a number of patriotic celebrities and democrats living in danger. Led by Enlai Zhou, the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held large-scale rescue activities. Starting from 1942, they rescued 800 culture celebrities and democrats. These activities are known as “Culture Celebrity Rescue”. Baishilong Church was an important stop during the activities. They transferred over 300 celebrities, including Zou Taofen and Mao Dun. In 2005, Baoan District government established a “Chinese Culture Celebrity Rescue Memotrial” at the church.
